Look up to add finishing touches to room

Nell Hill’s customers frequently bring me snapshots of rooms they’re having trouble decorating. The problematic areas don’t look right to them, but they’re not quite sure why. Usually, it’s simply because the room isn’t finished yet. All they are missing are the right accessories.

One important but often overlooked spot to accessorize in your home is the space up high — on a bookcase, above the kitchen cabinets or on a ledge. Putting just the right accents in these out- of-the-way areas lends visual interest to your decor, giving it a bit more warmth and charm. Here are some tips for adding some beauty up high.

ADD FLAIR TO FURNITURE TOPS

So many homes now have very tall ceilings, which opens up a world of possibilities if you want to position accents on the top of tall pieces of furniture like bookcases, secretaries, hutches and armoires. Becky, one of the designers at Nell Hill’s Briarcliff, has come up with a treatment I absolutely love. She gathers together three or four different-sized pieces of artwork. Starting with the largest piece in back, she rests the artwork on the top of the furniture and props it against the wall, layering the pieces forward to create a visually interesting grouping.

Another fun way to bring a touch of interest and whimsy to furniture tops is to brighten them with seasonal decor. Start with a great receptacle, like an old wooden dough bowl or a willow basket, then add your seasonal accents. For spring, let an assortment of faux blooming branches cascade out of the bowl or basket. In summer, fill it with wicker-covered bottles or a collection of wicker balls. For fall, add a mixed-up grouping of pumpkins and gourds. In winter, dress it up with pine boughs and ornaments.

GET COOKING ABOVE YOURKITCHEN CABINETS

After deciding what to make for dinner each night, the second- hardest thing you’ll do in your kitchen is to figure out how to decorate the space above your cabinets. We used to preach filling in with tons and tons of accents. But not anymore. Now we’re going for a simpler, cleaner, more edited look, picking just a few pieces to create a more powerful display overall. For instance, I’ve dotted a ledge in my kitchen with a monochromatic display of creamware dishes, like pitchers, bowls and platters. I love how simple and sleek it looks.

Above your cabinets, fashion a few groupings out of interesting objects that are similar in nature, such as a collection of pitchers, antique baskets, trays or lanterns. When picking your pieces, go for those that are larger in scale because smaller accents get lost when they are up high and make the display feel cluttered. Be sure to leave plenty of open space between each cluster so you have enough negative space for the eye to rest.

PUT A DECORATING EDGEON YOUR LEDGE

Lots of newer homes have been built with two-story entries that feature open ledges for decorating. While it’s fun to think about adding accents to your foyer, these lofty spaces can be a challenge to decorate

HOME SWEET HOME

This two-story family home sits in the center of the Red Feather subdivision, not far from the bustling retail hub at the intersection of Eagle and Ustick roads, where neighbors shop for clothing at Kohl’s and dine on oversized burritos at Costa Vida Mexican Grill.

A community swimming pool and several pocket parks punctuate the winding streets that lead to this residence.

The 2-year-old home’s dark-brown front door opens to a round foyer that leads to an airy great room with a two-story-tall ceiling. Windows set high into two walls allow sunlight to illuminate the living, dining and kitchen spaces.

The kitchen’s center island is topped with dark-brown granite tile. Stainless steel appliances and nutmeg-tinted cabinets create an updated backdrop.

A spacious master suite is located at the rear of the home behind the kitchen, and there is a bedroom situated near the foyer.

Upstairs, there are two more bedrooms, a full bathroom, a family room and an office alcove that overlooks the front yard

Banking on Essex is not set to fold

0 Comments | Essex Chronicle; Chelmsford (UK), Jul 29, 2010

DESPITE a low take-up of loans Banking on Essex looks like staying because it “does not cost anything”.

The scheme, an association between Essex County Council and Santander Corporate Banking, provides finance to small and medium- sized businesses in the county.

Worried county council scrutiny committee members probed the operation, which has the potential backing of Pounds 50 million of taxpayers’ cash but has only loaned Pounds 350,000 to 13 businesses since it began in December, with Pounds 387,000 spent on “intellectual” set-up costs.

Members were told by council bank project chief Richard Puleston on Friday before the council “stopped flogging a dead horse” it would look to involving more banks than lone partner Santander because it is not widespread in Essex.

Tory Cllr John Dornan said he thought Essex County Council had no expertise in banking and should not be involved with banks with toxic assets But Mr Puleston said: “The project does not actually cost us anything. The risk is shared between us and Santander and the Pounds 50 million is invested with the banks already as part of our portfolio.”

Beat Post Christmas Stress With Lending Stream’s Flexible Loan Repayment Plan

Market Wire, December, 2009

The festive season, as widely believed, is witnessing a surge in customer spending. For personal as well as short-term loan companies, this presents a wealth of opportunities to woo customers with wallet refills and more cash for holiday expenses. However, the situation is not as rosy as it seems. Some critics have assessed the aftermath of this borrowing spree, predicting more debts and subsequently, higher loan defaults post Christmas. That’s some food for thought since payday loans , thanks to their short-term nature, are considered practical solutions to instant cash needs, and with expenses shooting up, customers would certainly look to borrow some quick cash. An alternative payday loan solution with a lesser possibility of debt is therefore the need of the hour.

Lending Stream, a company offering same day loans , seems to have hit the right note. A flexible repayment solution, with the option of paying back the loan in 8 days or in 6 months, is their answer to the predicament. To ensure that customers don’t end up in a financial mess once the festivities end, the lender gives them the option of repaying in easy, monthly instalments. Unlike other lenders, there are no rollover charges (which in certain cases can go up to Pounds Sterling 20), no prepayment penalties, no admin fees (some lenders charge up to Pounds Sterling 10) or the higher possibility of default to fret over. Customers can borrow cash for a reasonable finance charge and repay at their own convenience.

A spokesperson from Lending Stream commented, “Our data on loan repayments further reinforced our belief that most of our customers find it hard to pay back a significant amount post Christmas, when their wallets get lighter. So, we give them the option of repaying in easy monthly instalments, which reduces their debt obligation. Since expenses are high during this season, most people find it hard to avoid loans. We do our bit to ease their post-Christmas burden by offering them flexibility in repayment.”

In a typical case scenario, a customer who takes a Pounds Sterling 200 payday advance ends up needing to pay around Pounds Sterling 270 when the first pay cheque arrives after Christmas. This doesn’t take into account the administration fee or the penalty for default (even when the delay is just for a day or two)

Gascoigne’s former wife wins libel case

0 Comments | Herald, The; Glasgow (UK), Jul 17, 2010

PAUL Gascoigne’s ex-wife Sheryl has accepted un- disclosed libel damages over a claim that she prevented him from seeing their son Regan.

She was at London’s High Court yesterday for the settlement of her action against MGN Limited over a December 2009 article in The People.

Her solicitor, Roddy Chisholm-Batten, told Mr Justice Tugendhat that the story – “Gazza heartache: Star in new booze fear after rift with son” – was untrue. It suggested that Sheryl had refused to speak to her ex-husband and had deliberately changed her telephone numbers to prevent him seeing Regan over Christmas.

The article also suggested it was feared that Gascoigne would revert to heavy drinking as a consequence of her “insensitivity”.

Chisholm-Batten said that MGN Limited wished to apologise publicly for the distress and embarrassment caused and had agreed to pay damages and Sheryl’s legal costs.

If you happen to do one

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

If you happen to do one small thing wrong during that opening phase, you could suffer long-standing damage to the business as well as the owner’s reputation.

Small things can irritate people and make them have negative thoughts about you or your business.

We always had an in house joke with our customers; we’d say to them “if you really like our work, please tell at least TEN other people!” “But if you don’t like something we’ve done PLEASE tell
us first, we want to make sure that you are 100% happy with our product and service”.

And of course, good customers were always rewarded with bonuses the next time they came in, especially when friends came in and said that “so and so told us to come to your studio for a family sitting”…That is good referal business.

Doing business with people is a two-way thing…

Man, on the other hand,

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Man, on the other hand, has a volitional, conceptual awareness.

Our body, emotions, mind, soul, and our awareness form the whole person. It is only by dealing with each part of the whole, that we can have complete health. All are connected and one can?t complete the value-judgment without the others. In Romans 2:15 Paul refers to the moral awareness that conscience awakens in Christians: ??the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another.?
